McDonalds Michael Jordan hologram – such fond memories of a Big Mac and getting trading cards

This Michael Jordan NBA MVP hologram didn’t come from a box of cards—it came from eating a Big Mac!

This is a 1991-92 Upper Deck Michael Jordan NBA MVP Hologram that was part of a McDonald’s promotion. If you look closely, you can see the little McDonald’s box logo in the lower left corner of the card.

Back in the early 1990s, basketball fans could enjoy a Big Mac and come away with a collectible featuring the biggest star in the game. Michael Jordan was already becoming a global icon, and promotions like this helped bring NBA trading cards to millions of fans.

I’ve owned higher-value Michael Jordan cards over the years, but cards like this one bring back some of the fondest memories. It’s not always about the most expensive card—sometimes it’s about remembering a trip to McDonald’s, opening a promotional pack, and adding a new card to your collection.

That’s why I believe every card has a story. This card tells the story of a time when a Big Mac, the NBA, and Michael Jordan all came together to create a memory that has lasted more than 30 years.

The Biggest Shot I Missed: I Kept the Kings and Not the Jordans

1986-87 Fleer Sacramento Kings

When Fleer returned to the basketball card market in 1986, it produced one of the most famous sets in hobby history. While collectors often focus on Michael Jordan’s rookie card, the set also captured the Sacramento Kings during their first NBA season in Sacramento after relocating from Kansas City in 1985.

Featured here are Larry Drew, Eddie Johnson, Reggie Theus, LaSalle Thompson, and Mike Woodson—five players who helped introduce NBA basketball to Sacramento fans.

As a longtime Kings fan, I owned dozens of each of these cards, most of which were pulled from packs purchased at a local drug store that I’d ride my bike to as a kid. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep any of the Michael Jordan rookies that passed through my hands over the years.

Today, those Jordans might be worth enough to buy a new car, but these Kings cards tell a different story—the beginning of Sacramento’s NBA journey. Every card has a story, and these cards remind me where my Kings fandom began.
